Tanner enjoyed it from the moment Ollie entered his room. Even before that, when they came on Henway pack lands his wolf was happy for having Oliver on his own turf. When the Selkie entered his room and chastised his Beta Tanner felt a weird sense of pride in the smaller man. Simon was a Beta wolf, he wasn’t small by any means and he was pretty powerful in his own right. To see his little Selkie putting the big Beta in his place made Tanner and his wolf proud. But what really gave him a deep sense of satisfaction was when Simon acknowledged Oliver’s status without even realising it.

Oh, Tanner wasn’t stupid. He figured out the cause for his failed attempt at marriage, ages ago. He had a pretty good idea why his wolf rejected Tilde when they first got together. Why it tolerated her at first, long enough for them to create Matt, and why it grew increasingly aggressive toward the she-wolf. He told her as soon as he understood that there would be no real mating between them. She said she understood, then she ripped him a new one for letting the best thing in his life go. It was pretty obvious, once he thought about it, and Tanner couldn’t forgive himself for not realising it before.

Oliver was his mate, it was that simple. When he finally understood that, he also understood why, after Ollie disappeared he had been so heartbroken. Sure he went with the wedding plans, changing only a bride to one he actually liked. He also didn’t object when it came time for his father to take the seat on the Council and leave the leadership of the pack to Tanner. He did everything everyone expected him to, he went through the motions each and every day, and yet, all this time he felt dead inside, as if Ollie took all the light and sunshine with him when he left.

His wolf had been a grumpy and easily irritable beast since they lost Ollie as well. The creature only perked up when dealing with their son. Tanner quickly figured out that Matt was no Alpha. It wasn’t often that the oldest son of the Alpha did not show signs of Alpha power, but it happened. Tanner didn’t care. He loved his child no matter what, as did his wolf. Up until this damned attack Matt was the only light in his life.

Now, however, Tanner had another chance. He found his mate and wasn’t intending to let him go ever again. His wolf was in perfect agreement. They were going to stalk and catch their prey, and make Ollie fall in love with them once again, for good this time.

Tanner was brought back from his musings by the cool touch of Oliver’s hands on his chest. Tanner focused on his pretty Selkie wanting to know everything about his future mate. The way he healed was one of the things he wanted to know, so he concentrated on what was happening.
